Moves with Us

2021

Gabriel Specter, Moves with Us 2021, porcelain enamel on steel, PS/IS 746, Brooklyn Moves with Us is a site-specific mural created by artist Gabriel Specter for the new PS/IS 746 Brooklyn. Made of 10 porcelain enamel steel panels, the 36’ x 6’ piece spans the length of the lobby hallway leading to the auditorium. Dancing figures dressed in traditional costumes are woven together with broad curves, geometric shapes and patterns from around the world to form a very special performance. The colorful arcs draw your eye into the composition, towards the dancers, up and down through the piece in a way that makes you feel as though you too are part of the experience. The tapestry of curves feel as though they were created by the dancers’ movements and evoke a sense of music, as if the figures are dancing through sound waves.  s. Moves with Us is a visual depiction of how it feels to watch a performance, where individual gestures, details of costumes and sounds stand out, and also work together to create a collective expression. The work recognizes each distinctive style while celebrating human achievement shared by all, moving together but as individuals.
