Overview

At the NYC School Construction Authority (SCA), safety is our top priority—on every job site, in every school, and throughout every stage of construction. We are committed to creating and maintaining safe environments for students, staff, and the surrounding community by following strict safety standards, collaborating with city agencies, and minimizing disruptions through strategic scheduling and oversight. Whether building new schools or renovating existing ones, our work is guided by a strong culture of safety, transparency, and accountability to ensure the well-being of all New Yorkers.

After Hours Work

All SCA work in occupied schools takes place on weekdays after normal school hours, on weekends and holidays. Normal school hours are defined prior to the start of construction in a meeting with the principal and SCA project officer.

To perform work after normal business hours in New York City, contractors are required to obtain an After Hour Variance from the NYC Department of Buildings (DOB). Normal business hours are weekdays from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. An After-Hours Variance and the hours governing the permit are at the sole discretion of the DOB. Click here for After Hour Variance forms and instructions.

Construction activity on new schools and additions takes place on weekdays from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. This work also takes place after 6:00 PM and on weekends when needed.
