Melissa Aviles-Ramos

Chancellor of The New York City Department of Education & Chair of the Board of Trustees The New York City School Construction Authority

Melissa Aviles Ramos is Chancellor of New York City Public Schools, the largest school system in the nation. She was formerly the Deputy Chancellor of Family and Community Engagement and External Affairs, as well as the Chief of Staff to former Chancellor David C. Banks. In those roles, she oversaw innovative family engagement programs such as NYC Literacy Hubs and our Family Literacy Ambassadors; she also launched and led Project Open Arms, our unprecedented effort to welcome, enroll, and support 45,000-plus of our newest New Yorkers.

As the leader of NYCPS, Chancellor Aviles-Ramos will ensure consistent and thorough implementation of key initiatives, from NYC Reads and NYC Solves to reimagined Student Pathways. She believes deeply that our schools must provide every student with a solid foundation in reading and math, while preparing them for well-paid jobs.

Additionally, Chancellor Aviles-Ramos plans to prioritize physical safety and emotional wellness, enhanced professional development for teachers, and in-depth family and community engagement. 

Chancellor Aviles-Ramos began her career as an English teacher and NYC Teaching Fellow at Harry S. Truman High School in the Bronx. She later served as principal at Schuylerville Prep and then became the acting superintendent to Bronx HS District 8, 10 and 11. Chancellor Aviles-Ramos earned her bachelor’s degree from Fordham University, Master of Arts in English Education from the City College of New York, and Advanced Certificates in school and district leadership from College of Saint Rose. She is a native New Yorker, a Latina, and a proud NYCPS parent.

Meet the Trustees

Peter McCree

A senior operations and technology executive, Peter McCree has a strong track record building and managing successful businesses within workforce management and technology consulting. He designed and launched the proprietary Link2ConsultVMS vendor management system (VMS), of which he is President & CEO and which was acquired by a large staffing firm in 2011. Link2ConsultVMS serves is a proprietary technology platform for large-scale and complex managed staffing accounts.

Peter’s 30+ year career in the IT industry has spanned operations, finance, sales, and marketing disciplines. Throughout his career, he has delivered rapid growth and profitability through expertise in mergers and acquisitions, financial and organizational turnarounds, national sales team management, C-level contract negotiations, and business development strategies. In addition to commercializing the VMS technology, he has brought several other software products through the development and marketing lifecycle.

Peter also cofounded and served as CEO for MBH Solutions, a company specializing in workforce management solutions, business and technology consulting, system integration, enduser training and documentation. He provided strategic direction and leadership and created a profit-driven business strategy resulting in one of the largest minorities owned consulting firms in the country. He sold the company in 2008.

Peter began his career at IBM, building on a framework of financial analysis to develop a successful career in sales, management, and administration. He holds a B.A. from the University of Massachusetts and served for three years as the Vice President of the School Board in Englewood, NJ.

Peter and his wife Lydia currently reside in Brooklyn, New York.

Elizabeth Bergin
Meet the Trustees

Elizabeth (“Liz”) Bergin

Liz Bergin joins the New York City School Construction Authority’s Board of Trustees with a wealth of experience in research, evaluation, and strategic planning. As the Senior Vice President of Research, Evaluation, & Strategy at the YMCA since 2016, she has played a pivotal role in leveraging data analysis, optimizing processes, and implementing industry best practices.

Liz's career includes leadership roles at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, the New York City Health & Hospitals Corporation, and previously at the New York City School Construction Authority where she served as Senior Director and then Vice President of Capital Plan Management from 1999-2012. Liz’s knowledge and experience with the New York City School Construction Authority extends to her current role on the Authority’s Audit Advisory Committee, which helps to oversee the internal audit function of the Authority.

She believes in promoting accountability and building consensus which is demonstrated by her current and past roles. Her deep understanding of public infrastructure and organizational strategy makes her a valuable asset to the SCA’s mission of building and improving schools for New York City’s public school students.

She holds a B.A. from Texas A&M University and an M.P.A. from George Washington University. In her free time, Liz enjoys scuba diving.
