About the SCA
SCA Overview

Our History
The School Construction Authority (SCA) was created in 1988 to build and renovate public schools in New York City. We manage the design, construction, and improvement of over 1,400 school buildings.
Key Benefits of the SCA:
- Better management of the construction process
- Lower school construction costs
- More competition among contractors
- Improved coordination between public and private sectors
Our Recent Work:
- We are in the final year of our 2020-2024 plan, preparing for the 2025-2029 plan.
- Over 45,000 new seats funded in the current plan.
- More than 25,000 seats are being built or designed.
- Nearly 6,100 seats are currently under construction.
Our Commitment to Accessibility & Sustainability
Accessibility and Sustainability:
- $750 million is allocated to make schools more accessible, ensuring each district has at least one fully accessible elementary school.
- We lead efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs by building all-electric schools and retrofitting existing buildings.
Temporary Classroom Units (TCUs):
- The SCA is actively removing TCUs, with 140 units removed so far and 43 more scheduled for removal.
