Matthew F. Fisher

The Setting

Matthew F. Fisher, The Setting , 2017, smalti glass tessera, PS 516 Sunset Park Avenues Elementary School, Brooklyn The Setting is a 9 ½ ft. tall mosaic depicting a beautiful sunset in varying arrays of yellows, pinks, blues and whites. Fisher’s inspiration for The Setting came from the school’s neighborhood, Sunset Park, and is installed on a west facing wall where the sun actually sets. The artwork shows the sun sinking slowly into a body of water as a windy road of reflected light moves towards the shore. The sun, the sky and the sea are all made of smalti glass tessera, and the spectacled browns and neutrals of the beach are made of Italian marble.  The artwork pays homage to the cycles of nature as the colors of the sky and water magically transform throughout the day.
