Jason Rohlf, Capable , 2024, vitreous glass, PS 174 Addition, Queens Capable is a site-specific artwork created by Jason Rohlf for the lobby wall of the new P.S. 174 Addition, Queens. The mural features a kaleidoscope of greens, reds, and blues that create an effervescent geometric abstraction.  Centered on a prominent horizontal axis, bands of vertical lines, rectangles and squares are arranged in unique interaction with contrasting curvilinear forms. Colored circles of differing sizes float atop the main composition providing a visual flow for the eye to follow. Functioning like what Rohlf describes as “an energetic street sign,” it is designed in relationship to the circulation of students, staff and school visitors into and out of the school building. The 23-foot long mural is installed along the lobby ramp and on a section of the entrance wall, bringing luminous color and movement to the entire space. When viewed up close, the mural’s tiny squares of shiny vitreous glass appear as pixelated units of pure color. From a distance, these sparkling flecks optically blend into fields of color, forming more distinct outlines of circles and rectangles. This dynamic quality encourages viewers to move around the lobby, experiencing the artwork from multiple angles and distances. The recurring circular forms are open to many interpretations, from speech bubbles to clouds to ripples in water. The artist placed these forms at varying heights, envisioning the mural as an invitation for students to engage with the artwork in new ways as they grow each year at P.S. 174.
