Giants of the Mind

2016

Chie Fueki, Giants of the Mind , 2016, screenprint on glass, PS 92, Queens Giants of the Mind is a four-story mural in four parts; one part for each floor. As the students walk between floors, they are invited to imagine all four parts of the mural pieced together. When combined, the mural forms brightly colored human figures, creating giant children as tall as the building itself. Just as a human is made from head to toe, so too is the mural.  The first floor contains imagery from feet to knees, the second floor, from knees to waists, the third floor, from waists to necks, and the fourth floor, heads.  Each floor acts as part of a whole with each section representing distinct activities. This makes the mental bridging between each floor an active process of the student’s imagination. The children are shown to be in motion, smiling, and learning.  Depicted in bright blues, pinks, oranges and yellows, Giants of the Mind seeks to embrace an enthusiasm for growth, discovery, and experience.
