Katherine Tzu-Lan Mann in collaboration with PS 32

Green Cantos

2024

Katherine Tzu-Lan Mann in collaboration with PS 32, Queens students, Green Cantons , 2024, laminated glass with digitally printed interlayer, PS 32 Addition, Queens Green Cantos is a site-specific artwork by Katherine Tzu-Lan Mann for the lobby and entry vestibules of the new P.S. 32 Addition, Queens. It is comprised of 6 glass panels installed in the original window frames of the existing building that were closed off to create the new lobby. The panels are arranged in two groups of three. Each set features a brilliantly colored tree. The first tree, closest to the entrance, is shown in the oranges and purples of fall; the other, closer to the play yard, shows the bright greens and yellows of spring. Together, the panels perform as new, imaginary windows bringing a burst of color and nature into the lobby. To create the artwork, Mann studied the diverse plant life around P.S. 32, including the linden, magnolia and London plane trees that line 171st and 172nd streets. Inspired by their vibrant foliage, she made hundreds of detailed line drawings and paintings in vivid colors, which she then cut and arranged in a collage to form the trees' trunks, branches and leaves. Amid the layers of foliage, Mann interspersed handwritten messages and drawings from P.S. 32 students, sharing their hopes and dreams for the future. The final compositions were digitally printed on glass producing varying levels of translucency and a captivating luminosity. The artwork invites students to look closely and appreciate the creative, inspiring and often humorous poetry of their peers. Mann's “windows” give the impression of looking into another world where a fantastical garden has come alive with words.
