Michelle Carollo

Metro-Motion

2018

Michelle Carollo, Metro-Motion , 2018, printed vibrachrome on matte panels and c-print cutouts on plexi, Queens Metropolitan High School, Queens Michelle Carollo’s Metro-Motion is a 47-foot long mural located in the corridor outside the cafeteria of Metropolitan High School in Queens. Beautifully printed on vibrachrome, the thirteen-panel mural mixes bold geometric patterns, colors and shapes with figures in motion playing sports. Carollo singled out sports as her theme in response to the high school’s enthusiasm for athletics. The figures run, cycle, play soccer, volleyball, and basketball. If you follow the dots that make up the figures’ heads and balls, your eye will travel from left to right in a wave shape that mimics a bouncing ball. The artwork features relief shapes in select areas that sit on top of the piece, giving an extra layer of dimensionality for the eye to hold onto. Carollo’s dynamic artwork seeks to tap into the moment of when the lunch bell rings and students fill the hall with energy, motion and chatter.
