Scott Trimble, Paths of Discovery , 2012, Terrazzo tile, wood, and Lithocrete, New Settlement Community Campus, Bronx Paths of Discovery is a series of four brightly colored pathways integrated into the architecture of the New Settlement Campus in the Bronx. The piece begins outside on the sidewalk of the exterior entry plaza. Four distinct colors of poured Lithocrete paving are interwoven to form an eye-catching pattern welcoming students, staff, and visitors, and passersby. The pathways separate in pairs as they approach the entrance doors to the two schools housed in the building. Each school is represented with two signature colors - turquoise and yellow for the IS/HS, red and green for the PS. Once inside their respective lobbies, the colored paths coalesce, twisting and turning, and transforming into three-dimensional benches. The paths then re-integrate into the floor and disperse, leading toward the classroom spaces. Paths of Discovery acts as a navigational tool directing students from co-mingling community space into focused educational environments. At the same time, the artwork serves as a metaphor for its viewers, intended to inspire exploration and learning.
