Marcos Chin, The Gardeners , 2020, laminated glass with digital imaging, PS 129 Addition, Queens The Gardeners is a site-specific artwork created by artist Marcos Chin. The 9’ x 9’ mural is made of three digitally printed, laminated glass panels installed in the lobby of the new addition to PS 129 Queens. Visible from multiple viewpoints inside the building, glimpses of the artwork can also be seen from outside through the vestibule windows. The Gardeners features a central flower being transformed by a variety of plant, animal and human helpers. A caterpillar, butterfly, ladybugs, a spider, a beetle, a bee and a majestic, royal blue bird at the top join fairy-like creatures within this fantastical landscape. All the characters are rendered in lush, vibrant colors with the flower and its offshoots most radiant of all. The Gardeners is a delightful illustration of collaboration. Each character is participating in their own way to help the flower grow. The artwork serves as a metaphor for how education can transform individuals through collaborative experiences, acquiring and exchanging knowledge, learning how to work with others, resolve disagreements and to share. The flower is made extraordinary through the combined efforts of everyone.
